Thismay be considered a minor detail but at-tention to such points can save muchvexation in the roundhouse. The grate arrangement is of an en-tirely different design from that used onthe U. S. R. A. standard light U. S. R. A. box grate had a straighthorn perpendicular to the grate on thelongitudinal center line. With this ar-rangement v;hen the grates are wide openthe maximum distance between the top ofone grate and the bottom of the next. MODIFIED ARRANOEMENT GRATE ARRANGEMENT ON OLD ANDNEW LOCOMOTIVES grate is 4 5/16 in. In redesigning thegrate arrangement, a curved horn wasused which threw the center of the grateconnection pin about 3^ in. ahead of thecenter. When these grates are wide openthere is a maximum of 7H in. from thetop of one grate to the bottom of the difference in design is shown plainlyin one of the illustrations. Drop gates were used on the U. S. R. , but these were omitted onthe new Mikados which have 10 rockinggrates on each side of the firebox. Withthe large openings it is possible to dumpthe fire much more quickly and easilythan with the old standard arrangementof drop grates and smaller openings inthe rocking grates. The curved horngrate is not original on the Nickel Platefor it is the standard on the New YorkCentral. However, the comparison be-tween the two designs is interesting, espe-cially as it is in connection with suchpoints as this
