Creation of oil using designer microbes. Conceptual computer artwork depicting an oil well pump in a petri dish, representing the use of artificially created micro-organisms to produce oil. Geneticists are working on methods for combining artificially replicated genes into workable DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences (genomes) that code for living organisms. It is hoped that such organisms may be designed to help solve specific problems such as fuel production.
