Kidney cancer thermal ablation. Illustration of radiofrequency or microwave ablation for treatment of a renal tumour following insertion of a needle-like probe. In radiofrequency ablation surgery a probe is inserted into the tumour and emits radio waves (or microwaves) to heat the tumour and destroy it. This targets the tumour with minimal damage to the healthy tissues surrounding it.
