Landerer explains to me, the cup, immediately before its secondbaking in an open fire, was repeatedly dipped in a wash of fine red claycontaining much peroxide of iron, which has produced the varnish-likeglazing. I would here call particular attention to the fact, that the gobletNo. 51 represents more or less exactly the form of all the goblets ofterra-cotta found by me at Mycenae and Tiryns.^ Those found there inthe royal tombs, and which are the most ancient, are of a light-greencolour, with curious black painted ornaments ; those found in the loweststrata outside the
