This condition of things lasted till1888, when the South-Western Railway Company completedthe construction of a new Direct line between Brockenhurstand Christchurch, and linked their Western with their newEastern (now the Central) Station. Later improvements haveincluded the construction of a line from Broadstone toBailey Gate, giving better access to the Somerset and Dorsetand the Midland systems, and another new line across thebackwater of Poole Harbour, greatly advancing the con-venience and the facilities of travel between Bournemouthand Weymouth. BOURNEMOUTH: 1810-1910. 137 expresses now do the journey between London and Bourne-mouth in two hours and ten minutes. Additional stationshave been provided at Boscombe and Pokesdown, and inconnection with the motor train service a halt has alsobeen established at Meyrick Park. On the occasion of the opening of the Direct Line itwas officially stated that the Company had spent over £600,000on the new line, station accommodation, and junction linebetween the East and West Stations. Since that time therehas been still further and very considerable new capitalexpenditure to meet Bournemouths needs.
