On August 7, 1943, Liebenow skippered a patrol torpedo boat to rescue the sailors of PT-109 who had survived several days on inhospitable islands after a Japanese destroyer had rammed their boat, killing two crewmen. His wife, Lucy Liebenow, received the flag from his casket.
