The Arve river threatened the French Alps town of Chamonix Mont Blanc with a sudden rise in levels around 14h on following a day of heavy rain during one of the rainiest summers in the past 100 years in the Alps. The river stayed high for several hours, flooding some riverside residences and businesses and causing evacuation of at least one restaurant (as reported in the Daupiné Libéré newspaper). The website reported the Arve river quintupled its volume in 24 hours following 80mm of rain at the French/Swiss border on Tuesday.
