Hawes Adjustable Shoe. Herewith we illustrate an AdjustableShoe,* especially adapted for winter use, orwhenever the frequent removal of calks isrequired. It is claimed that shoes withsmooth or sharpened calks may be quicklyadjusted without drawing a nail, scraijinga hoof, or heating an iron. The shoe is intwo distinct parts. The first, a thin butstrengthened plate, numbered in referenceto size, is nailed to the hoof in the usualmanner. This forms a base-plate, to whichAdjustable Shoes, corresponding in sizeand number, are accurately fitted. Theseare screwed to the base-plate by smallsquare-headed screws. This adjustableportion of the shoe is held strongly and. firmly to the base-plate. The strain isso evenly divided that the complete shoe isas rigid as though made in oi:e piece ; whilethe two parts thus combined are no heavierthan an ordinary shoe of correspondingsize-number. This shoe has been in constant use dur-ing the two past winters, with a view tothoroughly testing and perfecting its prac-tical efficiency, before presenting it to thegeneral public, and the manufacturers claiman assured success. • Dr. A.
