He may also have made the acquaintance of a landscape-painter more famous than any of these, one who may well haveattracted him by a sincerity equal to his own, and a kindred pre-occupation with the problems of chiaroscuro. Van Goyen paid avisit to Leyden in 1631, and is very likely to have met his youngconfrère in the Swanenburch circle, having been himself the pupilof Isaac, the father of Rembrandts first OLD MAN WITH A LONG BEARD. 1631 (B. 260). /•
