First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is a Canadian based mining & metals company whose fundamental activities include mineral exploration and mining. First Quantum is one of the world’s leading copper producers. Large and expensive machinery specifically designed for ore and mineral extraction is a prerequisite in the mining of copper. Open-pit or open-cast mining is a surface mining technique for the extraction of rock / ore in order to obtain minerals from the earth. The Copperbelt runs through northern Zambia and is recognized for copper mining. This photograph was taken in northern Zambia on the copper belt. Photo taken at the Kansanshi copper smelter. "During 2013, First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Mine commenced the construction of a Copper Smelter, planned to be the largest in the world, utilizing state of the art technology new to the global mineral processing industry. The new Copper Smelter also contains the largest single volumetric gas flow Acid Plant in the world."
