Almost a mile long, the Burnley Embankment or known locally as the Straight Mile on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Almost a mile long, the Burnley Embankment, known locally as the Straight Mile, carries the Leeds & Liverpool Canal across the rivers Brun and Calder 20m above the centre of Burnley. Designed by Robert Whitworth, it meant the valley could be traversed without the need for two systems of locks or a long detour following the contours of the land. It was built between 1796 and 1801.
