Martin Luther and the Ninety Five Thesis of the 31st October 1517 in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther (1483-1546) was a German professor of theology, priest and seminal figure in the Reformation. Ordained to the priesthood in 1507 Luther rejected the practice of the Roman Catholic Church towards indulgences. Luther proposed an academic discussion in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517. His refusal to renounce his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor.
