South American Traditional Items
This is a collection of South American folklore items which are produced for day to day use and to a high specification. The musical instrument is a charango, used in the folk music of Peru Bolivia Northern Chile and Northern Argentina, a ten string instrument sounding a little like a ukulele the body is made from an armadillo shell. The earth colours in the poncho are natural, a mixture of llama and alpaca wool which retains the oils of the animal thus making it waterproof, made by the indigenous people of southern Chile. The two small gourdes are pots for drinking mate, a traditional green tea from Argentina, the tea is sieved out by sucking it through a traditional straw made of silver called a bombilla. The vibrant coloured shawl known as an aguayo is woven from spun llama wool and is mainly used to carry an infant slung across the back of the indigenous women of Bolivia and Peru
