Students holds up sign at a BLM Black Lives Matter peace March through the streets of Canterbury
Today a peace March took place through the streets of Canterbury starting at the Westgate Gardens and finishing at The Dane John Gardens. The events was the mixture of two groups that had organised it through social media. The first was a movement founded by Craig Mwangi, Alex Mackechnie & Marianne Ngassa. The rationale behind the event was that representation in Kent for the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement is not reaching enough. The march was to raise awareness and to show support for victims of racial abuse, attacks and brutality who have no voice. The second group was organised by Mica-Nicole Miles under the banner of WSW (We Stand With), protesting the discrimination of people of colour both at home and abroad by standing in solidarity in the Dane John, Canterbury. In addition to music and personal stories there speakers, including: Sasha Langeveldt the first black female Student Union president of the University of Kent; Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Anglican Bishop of Dover; Canterbury Labour councillors Valerie Ann Kenny and Mel Dawkins; event organisers Craig Mwangi and Mica-Nicole Miles.
