Demonstration of atmospheric pressure, illustration. In this experiment, air is driven out of a can by boiling some water in it (left). A cap is then screwed onto the can to seal it and it is sprayed with cold water to cool it down (right). In the can the steam condenses as it cools and there is little air left inside, so pressure decreases. Atmospheric pressure (red arrows) outside the can is much greater, and as a result the can crumples.
