While the sameidea has been carried out in many othercities, the skyscraper in New York, its nativeland, is still the last word in this direction. These buildings grew out of the concen-tration of business and the ever-insistentdemand for business office room in the close-ly congested business centers. Two factors have made it possible—the passenger elevator, which gives im-mediate access to the upper stories, andthe steel cage system of construction, whichenables the architect to design his buildingto any desired height. The steel cage is aframework of steel beams, bolted togetherwith hot rivets. In effect it is a bridgeset on end. The walls are simply weathershields, fastened to it. Under the oldsystem the walls supported the floors; inthe new buildings, the walls serve merelyas curtains to shut out the weather, andare themselves supported by girders whichproject at the levels of the floors.
