THE WHALEY OR WHALLEY FAMILY. 301 Whalley remained at Courteenhall for eight years, butresigned in 1760, on being appointed Upper Grammar Master*,of Christs Hospital, He held the latter appointment from 1760 to 1776J ; andafterwards became Headmaster of St. Olaves, Southwark. In January, 1766, he was chosen (by the Aldermen ofLondon), Rector of the United Parishes of St. MargaretPattens and St. Gabriels, Fenchurch Street, and was insti-tuted, February 5th. He held this living till his death in1791. He was also Vicar of Horley, Surrey, from 1768 till1791. Peter Whalley was the author of various works (1) An Essayon the manner of writing history (anon.), 1746 ; (2) An enquiryinto the learning of Shakespeare, 1748 ; (3) A vindicationof the evidences and authenticity of the Gospels from the objectionsof the late Lord Bolingbroke, 1753.
