Take a black silk thread, armed at each endwith small curved needles, and carry both of these needlesthrough the apex of the pterygium from without inward andseparated from each other by a sufficient amount of thegrowth to secure a firm hold. Then carry these cuttingneedles downward beneath the loosened conjunctiva lyingbelow the oblique incision made by the scissors. The needles, after passing in parallel directions beneath the loosenedlower segment of the conjunctiva until they reach the regionof the lower fornix, should emerge from beneath the con-junctiva at a distance of about one-eighth to one-fourth inchfrom each other. Next, with the forceps, lift up the loosenedlower segment of the conjunctiva and gently exert tractionupon the free ends of the threads which have emerged frombelow, and the pterygium will glide beneath
