The Reedley Marina on the Leeds Liverpool Canal starting from Liverpool and finishing in Leeds Yorkshire with Pendle Hill behind

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is in northern England, linking the cities of Leeds and Liverpool. Over a distance of 127 miles (204 km), it crosses the Pennines, and includes 91 locks on the main line. It has several small branches, and in the early 21st century a new link was constructed into the Liverpool docks system. In 1789 Robert Whitworth developed fresh proposals to vary the line of the remaining part of the canal, including a tunnel at Foulridge, lowering the proposed summit level by 40 feet, and a more southerly route in Lancashire. These proposals were authorised by a fresh Act in 1790, together with further fund-raising. In 1794 a further Act was granted authorising yet another change of route, close to that proposed by Burdett, and yet more fund-raising, as Foulridge Tunnel was proving difficult and expensive to dig. It opened in 1796 and was 1,640 yards (1,500 m) long. The new route took the canal south via Burnley and Blackburn, but the latter was not reached until The main line of the canal was thus completed in 1816. The summit level is at 487 feet (148 m). The canal was built with locks 60 ft (18 m) long and 14 ft 3 in ( m) wide The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is said to be the longest single canal in England constructed by one company. The Canal passes through Burnley, skirting its centre, along the Burnley section there are number of notable features: The 1,120 metres (3,675 ft) long and up to metres (60 ft) high, almost perfectly level embankment known as the 'Straight Mile'. Built between 1796 and 1801 to avoid the need for locks, it is regarded as one of the original seven wonders of the British waterways.[The 511 metres (1,677 ft) long Gannow Tunnel was a difficult tunnelling project. Since 2009, the Reedley Marina has provided a 100 berth facility, popular with pleasure boaters.
