US Civil War -- This Northern soldier was a Sargeant. The original photograph negative was printed backward, making his unit number - 102 - backward on his cap. The photo was taken in New York City, so he probably belonged to the "102nd NY Infantry Regiment." The unit served Sept. 9, 1861, to July 21, 1865.
