Victor Gustav Bloede (1849-1937), German-US chemist and industrialist. Born in Germany, Bloede arrived with his family in the USA in 1850. He studied by night at the Cooper Institute in New York City, graduating in 1867 with a degree in chemical engineering. By 1875, Bloede was an owner of the Bloede and Rathbone chemical company. During the 1880s and 1890s, the company expanded into the profitable dye manufacturing industry. As Bloede's wealth grew, his philanthropic benefactions including founding a tuberculosis sanitorium in Maryland. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the Chemists' Club of New York City.
