Their son, John Crosby, father ofJudge Crosby, was born in Sheffield, February 15, 1829, received sucheducation as was afforded by the public schools of the day, the whileassisting in the cultivation of the homestead farm. As a young manhis services were sought in the fulfillment of the duties of numerouslocal offices and shortly after attaining his majority he was appointeddeputy to Sheriff Edward F. Ensign, being retained in that capacitythrouehout the administrations of Sheriff Ensign and of his BERKSHIRE COUNTY 145 Sheriffs Georg-e S. Willis and Graham A. Root, a period covering aquarter of a century. In i860 Deputy Sheriff Croshy removed fromSheffield to Stockbridge, and while at the later place was chairmanof the board of selectmen, as such being activelv identified with theraising of troops in defense of the Union. In 1868. at the request ofSheriff Root, Deputy Crosby took up his residence in Pittsfield, wherehe continued to live up to the time of his decease. December 17, was appointed in 1875, ^^Y Governor Gaston, a member of the Mas-sachusetts state detecti^e force, an office which he held for several years,during his incumbency rendering- conspicuous service in some of themost important criminal cases that had been tried up to that time. Hewas for several years one of Pittsfields board of assessors, and hisservices were frequently called into recjuisition
