Man inspects a ka tree in Yela, a protected ka forest on Kosrae, Micronesia. The 86 acre forest is owned by 10 local families and is estimated to hold anywhere from 500 to 1,000 of these precious hardwood trees, along with at least 10 species of mangrove trees. The trees, which can grow to 80 feet with a 30 foot wide buttress at the base, are found only on Kosrae and Pohnpei. Locals use the trees to make their outrigger canoes, flooring and furniture.
