Starfish (class Asteroidea). Coloured X-ray of three starfish, a marine animal with five-fold symmetry. Its arms radiate outwards from the centre, where the mouth and anus are located. With no front or back it can move over the seabed in any direction, walking on its hundreds of tiny suction feet (podia), which are contained within grooves along the underside of the arms. Starfish do not have brains. Instead, rings of nerves surround the central oesophagus and co-ordinate the movement of the starfish. Starfish can be predators, plant- eaters or scavengers.
