But thepeople themselves are by no means so prepossessing. Whata contrast they form to the tall dignified Bushongo of theplains to the south of the Sankuru ! Small and very dirtyin appearance, superstitious, timid, and treacherous, theyappear to have been influenced by the oppressive atmosphereand almost ghostly gloom of their native forest. As someplants require the rays of the sun and the fresh air todevelop them, so it appears to be with the negro.
