Kingscross Point Viking cremated ship burial, Lamlash, Isle of Arran, Scotland, UK, looking NE to the fort. The small cairn with projecting monolith was excavated 1908-9 by J A Balfour who found calcined human bones, pieces of whalebone decorated with concentric circles, pieces of iron including Viking boat rivets (clench nails), bronze fragments, two pieces of vitrified stone & a bronze coin: a styca of Wigmund, Archbishop of York AD831-854. Haakon of Norway's fleet lay in Lamlash Bay prior to his defeat at the Battle of Largs in 1263. The roughly circular dun, with an overall diameter of , is variously described as prehistoric, Iron Age, about 2,000 years old, Roman period, Early Christian, Dark Age or early medieval, built by Scots from northern Ireland or Vikings from Norway.
