Food preparation in Antarctica. Bread being kneaded in the Cape Evans base camp kitchen in March 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). The official expedition cook was Thomas Clissold. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. They brought a large supply of food with them to last through the long polar winter when no supplies by sea would be possible. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting.
