Phototherapy. Forty year old woman facing a light box during a phototherapy session. This form of therapy uses exposure to bright, full-spectrum light to help to treat the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and some sleep disorders. SAD, also known as winter blues, is a condition in which the sufferer becomes depressed during winter due to the lack of light. Its cause is not well understood, but phototherapy is effective at relieving the symptoms.
