A picture ofChiist bearing the Cross in Magdalene College, Oxford, formerly attributed toMorales, is said to be by one of the Ribaltas. The artist died at Valencia in1628. Juan de Ribalta, the son of the preceding artist, was born at Valencia in painted, at the early age of eighteen, a most praiseworthy composition represent-ing the Crucifixion, which is now in the Museum of Valencia. There is no doubt but. RIBERA. 95 that if Juan de Ribalta had lived to maturity he would have been an excellent died soon after his father in 1628, only thirty-one years old. In the Museum atMadrid may be found the Four Evangelists, a Dead Christ, sustained by angels, and aSt. Francis of Assist, whom an angel is consoling and filling with holy ecstasy byplaying on his celestial lute; but it is not specified to which of the two Ribaltas thesecompositions belong. Josef de Ribera was born at Xativa in 1589. When quite young, he was thepupil of Francisco Ribalta and a fellow-student with Juan.
