Ectodermal dysplasia dentition. View of the teeth of an adult male with a form of ectodermal dysplasia. Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a group of genetic disorders characterised by an absence or deficiency of function of teeth, hairs, sweat glands and nails. In some cases there are other complications such as a weakened immune system and vision and hearing impairments. There is no cure for the condition. Major problems arise from the patients' inability to sweat, and life- threateningly high fevers must be guarded against. Dentures can be made to compensate for the lack of teeth (known as oligodontia), and dry skin must be watched to prevent cracking and infection.
