The park was opened in 1952 and tens of millions of visitors have visited the attraction with profits from the park going towards various charities in the Netherlands. Madurodam was named after George Maduro, a Dutch law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces, first as a lieutenant in the army and later as a member of the Dutch resistance, and who died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945. A large-scale renovation, at a cost of €8 million, was made in time for the park’s 60th anniversary in 2012. This image is from a visitor’s old amateur black and white negative. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
