Ashgabat at night
Various rulers since the demise of the Soviet Union strove to make the capital city Ashgabat a show piece of well, not sure what. Former dictator, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, had a special interest in the Guinness Book of Records and sought to acquire as many as possible: going from the greatest concentrated mass of white marbled buildings, to the largest tapestry, to the largest horse's head statue, the biggest star shaped building the result is the city itself is a virtual human desert, very few people walk the streets and most of those who do seem to be, from experience, policemen either in uniform or not. Most of the buildings were built by the French construction company, Bouygues, which seems to have made a fortune in this country.
