They are kepton the second floor of a building con-structed almost entirely of wood. Perhapsthe reason why they have lasted so long isthat they have been so completely forgot-ten. Certainly the foreign troops who lootedPeking in 1900 would have paid a visit tothe White Cloud Temple had they knownof the treasures that it contains. The High Priest (Chen Yu Kuen) fullyappreciates the desirability of having thebooks reprinted; but he is a wise old manand declined the offer of the CommercialPress in Shanghai because he knew thatif the books ever left Peking he wouldnever see them again. The Commercial Press is now opening an office in Pekingand President Hsu is reported to be takingan active interest in the negotiations. Theidea is to print one
