It was,however, isolated, and difficult to reach, being entirely without railway communication, eitherwith Canada or with the United States. The near-est railway station for some time was St. Paul, inMinnesota. Travellers had to proceed thence bywaggons to Fort Abercrombie on the Red River,and on by shallfiw stern-wheeled steamers to FortGarry. For some years previous, the HudsonsBay Company and others had been utilizing thisroute for bringing in merchandise, and duringthe season of the year the river was navigableit presented a busy scene. In September, 1871,the first stage froai Pembina arrived at Fort.
