Atlas and the Apples of the Hesperides

The best preserved and one of the finest metopes portraying the myth of the Apples of the Hesperides. On the left behind Heracles, Athena wearing a tranquil expression assists him supporting part of the sky with raised arm while holding her spear in her right hand. In front of Heracles stands Atlas, who has brought back the golden apples guarded by the Hesperidian Nymphs, and offers them to him with both hands.
