Habits. Similar to those of P. r. baheri, but is perhaps notfound at such low elevations. It occurred in the low hills roundMargharita in Assam, but here the close proximity of the snow-line gives an avifauna and flora at 700 to 1,000 feet which obtainselsewhere at more than twice this height. It is curious thatthough all the Iled-headed forms of Parrot-Bill consort togetherwhen feeding, none of the red-headed birds are ever found mixingwith those of the grey-headed races. 120 SITTID^.. Pig. 24.—Sitta himaXayensii. Family SITTlDiE. The family of Sittidce, or Nuthatches, ia one which it is noteasy to place in any system of arrangement of the Order placed them between the Bulbuls (PyenonotidcB) and theDrongos (Dierundce), with neither of which can they have anypossible connection. Hartert places them between the Gerihiidceand ParidcB, an excellent position, but making these three familiesform a group entirely by themselves having no close connexionwith those which come before or after. In the present workthe preceding family, the Paradoxorniihidai, is an obvious linkbetween the Paridce and the Timaliidce, and a position betweenthese families seems, perhaps, the best for the Sittidce. In manyways they are closely allied to the Tits, especially anatomically, and though they have not such close affinities with the Timaliidee, they may well be an offshoot from the Paridce, the other end of S1TTA. 121 which has no visible link with any of the oth
