The arms we give were exemplified in 1625to Richard Symonds, a brother of Samuel Sy-monds, as being the ancient arms of the Sy-monds of Great Yeldam, Co. Essex, and ofNewport, Co. Salop, The Church of Great Yeldam, Co. Essex,contains a fine brass in memory of RichardSymonds. The first wife of the emigrant was DorothyHarlakenden, of the Harlakendens of EarlsColne, also in Co. Essex, whose cousin, RogerHarlakenden, was the founder of the Harla-kenden family in America. Arms: Azure, a chevron,engrailed, between three tre-foils, slipped, Crest : Out of a muralcoronet, chequey, argent andazure, a boars head of thefirst, crined, sable. The founders of this family—so highl} con-nected through New England, New York andNew Jersey—were two brothers, fohn and Rich-ard Ogden, who emigrated before the middle ofthe XVII. century, and settled in New Englandas architects and master-builders. They erectedthe first stone church on Manhattan Island, in1642, while New York—then called New Am-sterdam—was still under Dutch rule.
