A 19th century portrait of William Dampier (1651- 1715). He was the first Englishman to explore parts of what is today Australia and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. The navigator, and naturalist has been described variously as a buccaneer, pirate, explorer and privateer, Born East Coker, Somerset, England, Died London aged 63. He was evidently a feared captain and was court-martialled and found guilty of cruelty to his men and was subsequently dismissed from the Royal was however acquitted of causing the death of John Norwood, his boatswain.
