The total length of the road was to be 68 miles, witha 10-mile branch toOgden. Some rights-of-way were obtainedand a 5-mile extensionwas constructed as faras the Becks HotSprings. Later theroad was built 10miles farther north toLagoon, where establisheda beautiful artificialresort that since hasbeen successfully oper-ated in connection withthe road. An exten-sion was next made toLayton, 22 miles fromSalt Lake. This wasthe northern terminusof the road for severalyears. A few years ago itwas decided that itwould not be wise tobuild the line throughto Coalville as origi-nally planned, inas-much as the UnionPacific Railroad had. Salt Lake & Ogden Railway—Map of Route built its main line through the Weber canyon, with a branch toCoalville. The increase in wealth of the Salt Lake valley lyingwest of the Wasatch Mountains and the growth in importanceof the two largest cities of the State—Ogden and Salt Lake—on the other hand influenced the completion of the line tojoin tho^e two cities.
