Hybrid rocket design. Researcher calibrating a hybrid rocket model designed for use as an educational and research tool. The design combines a gas (nitrous oxide) with a solid fuel (acrylic), and the resulting combustion can be seen in the chamber at centre left. The temperatures produced can reach 3000 degrees Celsius. The model will be used both for training undergraduates and carrying out school demonstrations. The aircraft in the background is a Learjet. Photographed in 2009, at Kingston University, UK.
