CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - Thursday 2 May 2013, Annie Lennox addresses the Cape Town Press Club. Lennox, OBE, is a British singer-songwriter - she was part of the New Wave, The Tourists and the Eurythmics - political activist and a fighter against HIV Aids through her work in raising money for charities in Africa and has focused on gender based violence in South Africa. One of her hit singles was Walking on Broken Glass. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2011. Lennox, in response to what she calls "the epidemic of violence" in South Africa" against women and girls, has launched a petition imploring the South African media, key government officials and religious leaders to make a commitment of personal and professional responsibility in order to ensure that the issue of gender based violence is never marginalised again.
