The Northern Pacific, carrying 2582 wounded soldiers, caught fire and ran aground on the Fire Island sand bar near Honelyville, The soldiers were safely evacuated using breeches buoys, surf boats, naval launches, and submarine chasers. No lives were lost in the incident. The photograph shows the Northern Pacific about 200 yards off the Fire Island beach, partially buried in approximately 11 feet of sand.
