Born in Mattapoisett, of parents in moderate circumstances,December 16, 1837. After passing through the pubhc schools,by earnest apphcation he was finaUy enabled to gather together asufificient sum to enter Tufts College, from which he graduatedwith high honors in 1861, but burdened with a debt of $500. Hetaught school awhile and then enlisted in Company I, ThirdMassachusetts Volunteers, serving until the close of his enlist-ment. After his discharge from the service he taught in Wake-field, and was principal of theMelrose high school in 1865. In1866 he settled in Cambridge and commenced the practice of was Representative in 1872 and 1873, and City Solicitor from1873 to March 10, 1886, when he was appointed a Justice of theSuperior Court, from which he was advanced in 1898 to thebench of the Supreme
