Higham Marshes on the banks of the river Thames is an important nature reserve for feeding birds. The area is extensively excavated for gravel forming man made lakes. The area was the inspirational setting for the encounter between Pip and the convict Magwitch in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. The author lived at Glads Hill near by.
