5 ton 1917 Foden Steam Wagon M-8562 at Chipping Steam Fair, Lancashire, UK
A steam wagon (steam lorry or steam waggon) is a steam-powered road vehicle for carrying freight. It was the earliest form of lorry (truck) and came in two basic forms: overtype and undertype – the distinction being the position of the engine relative to the boiler. Originally built as a tractor in 1916/17 it was converted to a 5 ton tipper and shipped to France for the War Dept. On it's return, several years later, it was restored to WD livery. It bears the works plate Foden 5-ton model, built in 1917. Fodens built their first steam wagon in 1900 and the 5-ton model was introduced in 1902.
