At present, imitation leather is probablymost popular for smoking compartment seats, andit is occasionally used in main compartments aswell. Within the past two years no small amount of at-tention has been devoted to the design of a properform for seat cushions. The major point raised isthat, since the seat back is a support for the shoul-ders only, any extension of the seat back below theshoulders of a seated passenger is not only unneces-sary but becomes actually harmful by pushing thebody forward at the plane of the seat. The principleis indicated in the accompanying illustrations, ofwhich one shows the theory and the other one of itsrecent applications in practice with the preferred di-mensions. From the latter it may be seen that adepth of 15V2 in- in the clear is called for, this beingsomewhat less than the dimensions that have com-monly prevailed for some years. However, thisprovides considerably more space than would be. Preferred Dimensions for Correct-Posture Seats otherwise installed because of the overhang of theseat-back cushion. The influence of this theory in seat design ap-pears in a number of the most recent cars for cityservice, one such design being shown in the accom-panying line cut. This is a light-weight reversibleseat with a width of 34 in. and a weight of about60 lb. The back is shaped thin at the bottom, and the cushion is 16y2 in. wide. Practically the fullwidth is effective seating space, owing to the extrathrow of the cushion and the formation of the back, which, it should be noted, furnishes increased kneeroom for the passengers in the seat to the rear. In connection with this particular seat it mightbe remarked that although a foot rest is employed, there appears to be a considerable difference of
