MODEL RELEASED. Caesarean section. Surgeon holding a newborn baby upside-down while another cuts the umbilical cord, which has been tied off to prevent bleeding. The remainder of the cord will drop off within 7-10 days. This baby has just been delivered by Caesarean section, when it was delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus. This procedure is performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
