Molecular model of a molecular car, a type of molecular machine. The car is a single, small, organic molecule. It has four wheels, made from the polycyclic hydrocarbon fluorene (orange), which rotate about a C=C (carbon) double bond axle (white) using light (green) as the fuel. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the chemists Jean-Pierre Sauvage (b. 1944), Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (b. 1942) and Bernard Feringa (b. 1951) for their work on the design and synthesis of molecular machines. Feringa's work on nanocars was published in 2011.
