Helmuth von Moltke (1848-1916). 1914 portrait of the German military leader Helmuth Johann Ludwig von Moltke (Helmuth von Moltke the Younger). Von Moltke served as Chief of the German General Staff from 1906 to 1914 and played an instrumental role in the military manoeuvres in the build up to the First World War (1914-1918). Some historians place the blame for the failure of the German Marne Campaign (Battle of the Marne, 1914) at von Moltke's feet.
