Salivary glands, lateral (side) view. Artwork taken from a textbook by Sir Erasmus Wilson (1809- 1884), British surgeon and anatomist. The mandible (jaw bone) of this male cadaver has been divided and removed to reveal the salivary glands (yellow): the parotid gland (right), submandibular gland (centre) and sublingual gland (left). The muscles of the neck can also be seen, particularly the sternocleidomastoideus muscle running from behind the ear towards the collarbone.
